We are outdoor guides

Freestone is devoted to instruction and education, not just guiding.  Our trips will never have more than 4 clients to each guide.  This ensures the personal attention that everyone needs to maximize their outdoor learning experience.  We believe in customizing each trip to our clients' desires and level of experience.  That said, here is a sampling of trips that we are currently offering:

The Classic

The philosophy that started it all. From the city to serenity and back. This overnight trip focuses as much on early morning starts, crisp mountain streams, woodland solitude, chasing native brook trout and practicing bushcraft skills as it does on relaxing around an evening campfire catered with a three course dinner. You will have a weekend of fish tales, fireside memories and restful sleep for a much needed retreat from the city.

Spring foraging

Get out of the city and free yourself from winter by spending a weekend in the woods stalking wild edibles.  Wild edibles are the most seasonal and local plants you can acquire, and there is no better way to build plant identification skills than by getting outdoors and having a trail nibble.  This is a weekend focused on building knowledge of local plant life, natural navigation, and wood fire cooking skills.  Varietals and abundance will be determined by nature, but with any luck we'll have some tasty greens to top off a fireside dinner.  **Foraging is an integral component of all Freestone trips, but spring wild edibles are generally most prevalent March through May.**

The Night Owl

We understand that not everyone likes to wake up at first light. This trip is for the late night audience out there. Providing all the amenities of The Classic, this trip is for those of you who want more moonlit campfire time. More time to catch up with old friends and more time to make new friends in a pristine forest that feels a lifetime away from the city. We’ll still make you carry a pack, but the fireside laughs will make it all worthwhile.

The Roaming Gourmand

At Freestone we take pride in our fresh cooked backcountry meals. That being said, there’s not enough hours in the day for us to prep beet cured salmon, Moroccan root vegetable stew, embers for a rescoldo frittata and fresh baked flat breads… Unless of course we bring along a professional wood fire chef. For this trip we suggest planning for more time recovering in a hammock than putting in trail miles.

ABAO Wilderness Survival

Freestone has always placed a strong focus on camp amenities, fresh fireside cuisine and creature comforts… We tossed all that aside with this one. On this trip, we focus on Northeast wilderness survival training, as you leave the security of the trail to hone your bushcraft skills. Get ready for natural navigation, bare bones fire skills, knot tying, water acquisition methods, loft theory, edge tool debates, foraging, trapping, effecting rescue, and of course building your own primitive shelter to spend the night.

Catskill Day Trips -- Fly Fishing Only

This is a full day guided fly fishing trip for one or two anglers includes pickup and dropoff in the New York City area.  Early morning pickup followed by a 2.5 hour drive to the Catskills, where we fish the world famous Upper Delaware watershed, including the legendary Beaverkill River, Willowemoc Creek, East Branch and Main Stem of the Delaware River. Flies, rods, reels, lunch, drinks, and snacks included.  Waders and boots are not provided, but we can arrange for rentals.
